Enchilada sauce is one of those things that we all tend to buy canned, thinking it’s easier and more convenient than making it from scratch. However, with just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you learn how to make enchilada sauce that is bursting with flavor and far superior to anything you could buy in a can. Once you try making your own, you’ll never want to go back to store-bought!
One of the best things about making an easy enchilada sauce recipe at home is that you can easily make a large batch and freeze it in jars, so you’ll always have it on hand when you need it. This makes meal prep quick and easy – simply thaw the sauce and use it to make a variety of delicious meals in just minutes. You can use enchilada sauce in so many different dishes – from classic enchiladas to chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, tacos, and more.
The possibilities are almost endless. Add enchilada sauce to your favorite chili recipe for extra flavor. We have used it as a marinade for grilled chicken and added it to shredded chicken for burrito bowls. You can even use it as a pizza sauce, topping it with your favorite veggies and cheese for a Mexican-inspired twist on a classic dish. With enchilada sauce ingredients in your pantry, you’ll never run out of ideas for delicious, easy meals that the whole family will love!
What is enchilada sauce made of?
Simple ingredients using a combination of spices and fresh Roma tomatoes. The flour is used as the thickening agent. You can use all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour. I have not tried the recipe with coconut, almond, or whole wheat. But I think you could start with 1/4 cup and add until it reaches the desired thickness.
Is enchilada sauce just taco sauce?
We use enchilada sauce for a variety of recipes! You can make breakfast burritos or top some eggs with enchilada sauce. You can add it to grilled chicken to jazz it up a bit. You can get as creative as you like!
Can you freeze the leftovers?
The beauty of making a big batch of enchilada sauce is that you can freeze it for later! I like to store mine in Mason jars because the consistency is perfect after thawing. (Be sure to leave about an inch of room on the top to allow liquid expansion in the jars). You can also use freezer zip lock bags and lay them flat to freeze.
